Vienna Airport History

Built in 1938 as a military airport, the British obtained control of the airport in 1945. A Betriebsgesellschaft was founded in 1954 and the airport became Vienna’s and Austria’s main aerodrome.

Many improvements have been made to the airport with the new Terminal 1 opening in 1992 along with the shopping area which included a Harrods store until it closed in 2003. In 2006 a VIP and general aviation-terminal opened.
